Big Changes Underway...

St. Luke’s has a long range plan to make the entire building accessible to anyone.   Presently there is an ageing wooden outdoor ramp to the church entrance, but inside, until now, there has been no way – without negotiating various flights of stairs – for people to move from the body of the church up into the chancel, or to Church House (the parish hall), or to the lower level meeting rooms.

The first stage of the plan has now been constructed: a proscenium, or extended stage, which has many uses, and a ramp which allows access to the chancel level.   Now, because of the ramp, anyone who so desires can receive Holy Communion at the high altar, or attend the smaller services which are usually held in the chancel, or meet with the Rector in his study.

The next stage is finally underway.  An elevator is being built to give wheelchair access to all levels of the church complex.  The accessibility plan, long in preparation, now becomes a reality.  Work will continue throughout the summer and well into September of 2007.  However, because the entire structure is being set outside the current buildings (see artist’s impression, first image below), interior movement should not be affected.

The pictures below tell the story.  They are being updated as work proceeds (see most recent).
